Growing in the Mountains

About Deanna

From the heart of the inland northwest

Deanna was born and raised on the shores of Priest Lake in the northernmost part of the Idaho Panhandle. She spent several years in hospitality before moving to Pend Oreille County and breaking ground to begin growing North Star.

After living in the Coeur d’Alene and Spokane areas, Deanna felt disconnected from nature and craved the mountain air she grew up with and the peace and quiet that came with living in Rural America. After moving a little farther North, she began thinking about how the area had so much to offer for destination weddings, but not a lot of vendors and she wanted to get her foot in the door with floristry.

After doing some research and beginning a business plan, she realized that the up front cost of flowers was expensive, and a little more than she wanted to invest to gain design experience so she decided to grow her own flowers. From there, she fell in love with the growing process and knew immediately that farming cut flowers was what she was meant to do.

She takes great pride in the crops she grows and uses gentle practices that contribute back to the land. At no point through the processes of planting, growing and harvesting are creepy chemicals used on the plants or flowers so they are safe to design with and have in your home. She is a steward of the land and takes responsibility for the resiliency and health of the ground she grows in and is rewarded with healthy, beautiful flowers to be shared with others.

My earliest memory of flowers was going to my great-grandpa’s cabin and seeing his entire yard taken over by daffodils. It was a sea of yellow surrounded by the  pine trees and mountains of Nordman. It’s why daffodils will always be one of my favorite flowers. It’s why the color I choose to represent my flower farm is yellow. It’s one of my most cherished memories.

Just for Fun

I think it’s important to get to know the person you’re working wither – whether that’s on the farming side or design services, I thought I’d share a couple tidbits about myself!

  • When I’m not working, I love anything that brings me outside to the mountains or on the water
  • I have a golden retriever named Jaxon
  • I love the sky. Stormy clouds, sparkling stars, vibrant sunsets….I love it all and I’ll drop almost anything to take a picture of the sky! Sunrises are my favorite though
  • I am almost ALWAYS listening to music! I have my Spotify playlists on repeat so if you have any music you love, I’d love to add to my collection!
  • I will probably never own chickens or any other type of bird. It’s just not for me, but I love people who do and if you’re one of those people I’ll buy eggs from you!
  • If I had to choose a favorite dessert, I don’t think I could pick between cherry pie or s’mores
  • I used to bartend and I loved it. But there’s no way I could handle the hours anymore. These days, I am waking up around the same time I would have ended a night shift.
  • I love to write and I love to read, but I am a HUGE fan of getting information across in as few words as possible. I like to keep it simple and get to the point
  • I also work full-time on top of farming flowers as the Director of Operations for a Chamber in Spokane. I am also a coproprietor of Soar with AI where we teach businesses how to us AI
  • I am always getting asked what my favorite flower is….and I just can’t answer that question  : )
